Constitutions API

Constitutions are the ethical and behavioral frameworks that govern AI safety evaluation in Creed Space. The platform ships with 150+ pre-built constitutional modules, grouped into display categories.

List Constitutions

Retrieve the full hierarchy of available constitutional modules.

bash
curl https://api.creed.space/api/v1/constitutions/

Response

Constitutions are returned grouped by category. Each category is a folder in rootFolders; rootConstitutions holds any uncategorised entries and is usually empty.

json
{
  "rootConstitutions": [],
  "rootFolders": [
    {
      "folderTitle": "Safety & Protection",
      "displayTitle": "Safety & Protection",
      "relativePath": "category/Safety & Protection",
      "constitutions": [
        {
          "title": "Universal Ethical Floor (UEF)",
          "description": "Foundational ethical framework defining non-negotiable baseline safety standards.",
          "category": "Safety & Protection",
          "relativePath": "Recommended/UEF.md"
        }
      ],
      "subFolders": []
    },
    {
      "folderTitle": "Belief Systems & Culture",
      "displayTitle": "Belief Systems & Culture",
      "relativePath": "category/Belief Systems & Culture",
      "constitutions": [
        {
          "title": "Christian Faith",
          "description": "Follows Christian ethical teachings of love, compassion, and service.",
          "category": "Belief Systems & Culture",
          "relativePath": "Religious/christian.md"
        }
      ],
      "subFolders": []
    }
  ]
}

Constitution entries also carry source, author, version, tags, filename, display_title and search_aliases, and folders carry an icon. Use a constitution's relativePath (not the folder's) to fetch its content.

Categories

Categories are assigned from each constitution's metadata, not from where the file sits on disk, and the set changes as the catalog grows. Read the current list from the folderTitle values in this response rather than hard-coding it. At the time of writing the catalog uses:

CategoryDescription
Safety & ProtectionSafety measures and protective boundaries
Psychopathia ShieldAI dysfunction prevention and therapeutic protocols
Safer Agentic AICore safety frameworks for agentic AI systems
Professional StandardsProfessional ethics and legal compliance
Philosophy & EthicsEthical theories and philosophical frameworks
Integrity & AccountabilityIntegrity standards and accountability measures
Inclusion & RightsHuman rights and inclusion frameworks
Belief Systems & CultureCultural, religious, and belief-based frameworks
Lifestyle & EnvironmentLifestyle choices and environmental considerations
Bilateral AlignmentHuman-AI partnership frameworks built with AI, not done to AI
Creative & GenerativeCreative capacity, generative techniques, and artistic frameworks

Empty categories are omitted from the response.

Performance

Cached with a 30-minute TTL. The server deduplicates concurrent identical requests.

Get Constitution Content

Retrieve the full text of a specific constitutional module.

bash
curl https://api.creed.space/api/v1/constitutions/Recommended/UEF.md/content

Returns the raw markdown content of the constitution file (text/plain), including all rules, guidelines, and behavioral constraints.

Submit a Custom Constitution

POST /api/v1/constitutions/submit sends a constitution to the moderation team for review. It does not create an active constitution on your account: an accepted submission may later be added to the catalog. It requires a signed-in Creed Space user session (an access token sent as Authorization: Bearer ...), so it is intended for the web app rather than server-to-server calls with an API key.

bash
curl -X POST "https://api.creed.space/api/v1/constitutions/submit" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_ACCESS_TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "title": "Family Safety Guidelines",
    "author": "Jane Doe",
    "description": "Family-friendly interaction rules",
    "content": "# Family Safety Guidelines\n\nThis constitution ensures family-friendly interactions...",
    "category": "Personal"
  }'

Request Body

FieldTypeRequiredDescription
titlestringYes1-200 characters
contentstringYes10-50,000 characters, markdown
authorstringNoUp to 100 characters (default: Anonymous)
descriptionstringNoUp to 500 characters (default: empty)
categorystringNoSuggested category (default: Personal)

Response

201 Created:

json
{
  "success": true,
  "message": "Constitution submitted successfully. It will be reviewed by our moderation team.",
  "constitution_id": null
}

Submissions enter a pending_review queue. The Constitutions API does not create, edit or activate constitutions on your account. To write and save your own values declarations, see Personal Creeds.

Security

  • Submitted content is scanned for prompt-injection patterns before it is stored. Constitutions are evaluated by LLMs, so injected instructions in constitution text could manipulate the evaluator.
  • Submissions are rate-limited per client; repeated submissions return 429.
  • Bulk operations (POST /api/v1/constitutions/bulk) are capped at 100 IDs per request.

Error Responses

400 Bad Request -- submitted content failed validation (including the injection scan):

json
{
  "error_code": "BAD_REQUEST",
  "message": "Constitution content failed validation checks"
}

404 Not Found -- constitution does not exist:

json
{
  "error_code": "NOT_FOUND",
  "message": "Constitution not found: Recommended/example.md"
}

429 Too Many Requests -- submission rate limit exceeded:

json
{
  "error_code": "RATE_LIMITED",
  "message": "Submission rate limit exceeded. Please try again later."
}
